Orvis Artists-In-Residence

ImageEarlier this year, my good friend/fellow artist photographer Brandon Ng and I were selected as Orvis Artists-In-Residence to collaborate on a large scale installation piece at the Spalding House location of the Honolulu Museum of Art.  Starting this weekend, we’ll be working to create a portrait of The Spalding House as a site-specific installation piece. Through the use of historic photographic techniques we will produce a “blueprint” that will redefine how weinterpret a portrait. Going beyond the physicality of the location, the portrait will encompass the environment as a whole; a gathering place, a landscape and web of human relationships. In the spirit of collaboration, we are encouraging visitors to participate by providing found objects from the museum ground to help create a full portrait of The Spalding House.

Please stop by the museum to check out the progress of our piece.  Or even better, please help us out in creating our piece!  We’ll be there Saturdays (10am – 4pm) and Sundays (12pm – 4pm) till May 19.

I’ll be posting more about our residency, but be sure to follow our instagram page @orvis_blueprint or http://instagram.com/orvis_blueprint for a behind the scenes look at the making of our piece.

Salon des Refuses at Ektopia

Head over to Ektopia in Kaimuki to see some amazing prints in the Salon des Refuses exhibition.

Inspired by the 1863 Exbhibition in Paris in which rejected artworks by famous artists (Edouard Manet and Camille Pissario to name a few) were displayed.  At Ektopia, the Salon des Refusés has on display pieces rejected from the Honolulu Printmakers 85th Annual Exhibition.  I’ve got to say I’ve never been happier to be among rejects as awesome as these.

The show will be up until March 15 with Ektopia open Thursday – Saturday from 11am – 4pm.

Hawai’i Craftsmen Fiber Art Show 2012

Thanks to all my friends and family for stopping by the Honolulu Museum of Art School (Linekona) Gallery to see the “In, Of, or About Fiber” art show put on by the Hawai’i Craftsmen and juried by artist Susan Taber Avila.  My multi-media piece Kū‘ai Mai, ‘ai Aku, made of 100+ receipts sewn together and decorated with the Hawaiian words for “buy” and “sell”, received an Honorable Mention award from the Hawai’i Craftsmen.

The show will be open till Nov 17, 2012, from 10am – 4pm Tuesday – Saturday.  Check it out!

Alternative Processes Show

Earlier this month I had the amazing opportunity to visit the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO to attend the artist reception for the Alternative Processes show.  One of the images from the “Ka Holoku” series that was made in collaboration with my friend and fellow artist Brandon Ng made it into the exhibition, which was juried by the guy who literally wrote the book on Alt Processes, Christopher James.  It was a huge honor to not only have work in the show, but to also meet some of the awesome people at the Center and other artists who have work in the show. :)

Check out some pictures of the show below.
